Workshops

The Ideation & Prototyping Workshops hosted by Civic Hall Labs will take place during the open submission phase of the NYC BigApps 2017 competition. These open product development workshops will guide participants along a journey from introducing the challenges through to discovery, user research, ideation, design, and refinement of a solution through prototyping. Participants will gain practical skills and methods for problem solving from each session along with “lab” time to practice and build out an idea with their teams.

These sessions will strengthen participants’ submissions by enabling their ideas to be grounded in real user needs and experiences. By offering these workshops, we will provide participants with the tools necessary to develop solutions that address the NYC BigApps 2017 challenges and aim to improve the lives of New York City youth, seniors, and immigrants.

Introduction to Challenges (Inspire + Define)

Tuesday, January 24, 2017
6:00pm – 9:00pm
Civic Hall, 118 W. 22nd Street, 12th Floor
Registration Closed

This kick-off workshop will introduce participants to the BigApps 2017 challenge topics and overview the design process we’ll be using throughout the workshop series. From this session, participants will learn how to define their challenge area, get inspiration around the challenge topic, and scope the research phase for product development.

Research & Understand (Discover)

Wednesday, February 8, 2017
6:00pm – 9:00pm
Civic Hall, 118 W. 22nd Street, 12th Floor
Registration Closed

In this session, we will apply a human-centered and empathic approach to design research and ethnography in order to deeply understand unmet user needs.  Some of these activities will include user and subject matter expert interviews, as well as observations and secondary research. Participants will come away with an understanding of the core principles of design research.

Synthesize Research (Discover)

Tuesday, February 21, 2017
6:00pm – 9:00pm
Civic Hall, 118 W. 22nd Street, 12th Floor
Registration Closed

In this session, we will identify patterns across qualitative and quantitative data sets. We’ll explore open source data & reports, interpret qualitative data from our interviews and learn data visualization techniques. From there, we’ll generate insights to highlight the opportunities for initial product concept direction.

Join us as we also learn how eligible people and organizations can get no-cost access Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and its suite of tools for hosting, computation, analysis, machine learning, computer vision, and translation. Come learn how you can utilize Azure as you build your BigApps solution. Microsoft staff will be on hand to answer questions, and will provide ongoing support as mentors throughout the competition.

Understand the Constraints (Design)

Tuesday, March 7, 2017
6:00pm – 9:00pm
Civic Hall, 118 W. 22nd Street, 12th Floor
Registration Closed

From here we’ll begin a series of rapid and iterative brainstorming processes that will lead us through prototyping and ideation. This session will focus on using the research from the previous weeks to start making design decisions and scoping product prototypes.

Also, join members of the NYC Open Data team and Department of City Planning for a demo of the NYC Open Data Portal and new Facilities Explorer tool (launching soon), followed by a breakout session. You’ll learn the basics about how to access NYC data (1600+ datasets!) and get an overview of other tools powered by NYC Open Data that you can use to support your research and further develop your solutions for the BigApps competition. This is an official event of the City’s inaugural Open Data Week!

Ideation & Prototype Building (Design)

Wednesday, March 22, 2017
6:00pm – 9:00pm
Civic Hall, 118 W. 22nd Street, 12th Floor
Registration Closed

At this stage of the workshop series, we’ll “build to think.”  We’ll rapidly prototype our concepts in order to get a better sense of how it more tangibly supports the needs of our users. This will be an opportunity for teams to get early stage feedback from a variety of experts, mentors, and community members.

Prototype Testing (Test)

Wednesday, April 5, 2017
6:00pm – 9:00pm
Civic Hall, 118 W. 22nd Street, 12th Floor
Registration Closed

At this point in the product development process, we’ll learn the tools necessary to test our prototypes with our target users. We’ll go over best practices in usability testing, and outline the process for creating user journeys. This is the second to last workshop in our series, and it will lay the foundation for live prototype testing with youth, seniors, and immigrants at our final workshop on April 19.

User Feedback & Learnings (Refine)

Wednesday, April 19, 2017
6:00pm – 9:00pm
Civic Hall, 118 W. 22nd Street, 12th Floor
Registration Closed

During our last workshop of the series, we will have the opportunity to learn from our end-users: youth, seniors, and immigrants. During the first half of the workshop, teams and innovators will work with their target user group, learn about their daily activities and needs, and get feedback on their ideas and prototypes. During the second half of the workshop, participants will have a final chance to connect with mentors with expertise in design, product development, technology, and marketing. We will also highlight the importance of storytelling to get to the “why” behind the prototype, and participants will come away with a refined framework to submit to the NYC BigApps 2017 Competition. Applications are due April 30th so we’ll address any last-minute submission questions.
